Defining conservation areas in the Orinoco

The High Conservation Value Areas (HCVA) are defined as areas where social and environmental values are present, such as habitats that serve for the wild life, offering protection to water basins and hydrological regulation, being a food source or having a cultural importance, among others. In other words, they are areas that need to be managed adequately with the purpose of conserving or improving these identified values (Jennings et al, 2002).
